50 Gal Roughneck Wheeled Trash Can

This trash can’s durable, shatter-proof material withstands severe weather conditions. The heavy-duty large wheels make trash day less strenuous. It has an exceptionally strong, mold-in handle. It is an industrial strength trash can with a snap-fit lid.

A "garbage" can

Date:April 14, 2013
What a disappointment. "Rough" this thing is not. Broken lid, blown out bottom, this thing is in no way weather resistant. A moderate Illinois winter was enough to destroy this piece of junk.
I do NOT recommend anyone purchase this product, unless you like wasting your money.
Oh, if you do decide to buy this product, make sure you keep the receipt handy. You don't get any warrant without it.

Pop My Lid

Date:April 8, 2013
Purchased this item based on the reputation of Rubbermaid from my local Ace Hardware. The lids are difficult to remove although this is probably by design so that they don't come off easily. Unfortunately the lids have all cracked in less than one year. Using a lot of glue and tape but nothing will keep them from falling apart. While not the end of the world usually I have garbage cans for 10 or 15 years after the elements, critters & garbage men have done their best to destroy them. I will be calling Rubbermaid and hopefully they will offer a reasonable solution.

Lid is no good

Date:April 6, 2013
The can itself is good we have had it for a couple years, but the lid hasn't held up. It is very poor quality compared to the can itself. I would like a replacement for mine for sure. I'm not sure if I have the receipt from when I bought it. But Rubbermaid needs to replace my lid. THey need to make the lid as good as the can.!!

Can is not holding up

I purchased a couple of the Roughneck Commercial garbage cans on wheels. We keep our cans in an enclosed garage, so they are not out in the elements. I purchased them because the lable read, "lifetime guarentee". Well, it has been a few years, but the bottoms are totally split and falling apart, so they need replacement. We also have several other garbage cans and they are even older, but in good condition still. So, I went to the local store and purchased 2 more of these wheeled Rubbermaid cans. I came home to submit my claim, but the web address where we are to submit it no longer works (http://www.rubbermaid.com/supportCenter/Pages/WarrantyInformation.aspx
.) I also have looked and can not find the receipts. The lables are old and very weathered as well, however I did remove them and photograph them. Help.

Good can, just cannot use

Date:April 2, 2013
The garbage cans are great, hold up well, we have two and have had them a few years now. The problem and reason for the poor rating on use is that we cannot find any liner that fits the can. We have tried all the brands that are available and even tried some that were ordered online and none fit. By not being able to use a liner it makes the can unusable.
Response from Rubbermaid:By Rubbermaid Consumer Service April 8, 2013
Thank you for taking the time to contact Rubbermaid regarding your 50 gallon Roughneck trash can.

For a can with this capacity, we recommend using a 55 gallon bag or liner. Rubbermaid Home Products does not manufacture liners or bags, however we would suggest contacting your local retailer and hardware stores for product availability in your area.

Good Product

This trash can holds so much. It is very very strong. The handle is very strong as well. This trash can was ran over by a car in my drive way and every part of it still works. This is a great trash can.

50 gal roughneck trash can

This product is very durable however the lid does not stand up to the Florida weather. I called to find out about replacement lids and much to my surprise they are available and very reasonable. Thank you Rubber Maid for your consumer support.

Bad lid

Date:March 10, 2012
Very disappointed is this garbage a can. it looked ok when we bought it in April 2010 but the lid soon started to crack. We taped it and the cracks just got worse 3 of the corners cracked then the top got a split in it and now it just a mess. of course we don't have the sales slip after 1 1/2 years. Can you buy just a lid because the bottom is in excellent shape? Would like an answer, other wise we threw our money out with with the garbage can. The can we had before lasted at least 14 years.

Roughneck 50-Gallon Wheeled Trash Can Snap-fit Lid

Date:February 19, 2012
I've had the trash can for over one year. The can works great, but the snap-fit lid is terrible. After about 6 months, the lid cracked in three different directions.
Don't buy this Roughneck can until the snap-fit lid is redesigned. I made the mistake of buying a second set of Roughneck cans thinking my lids must have been run over by the trash truck. The second set of lids cracked just like the first set. The lid is a poor design, poor durability, and poor quality.

Broken Lids

Date:February 18, 2012
For a $30 dollar trashcan, the lids are especially sorry. I have had 3 cans now. The first I bought was going strong until recently when the lid started selfdestructing (4 years). the second fell completely apart within 6 months. I thought it was an exception so I bought a 3rd to replace it, the lid on it is already falling apart (1 year).
I now have an excelent warranty solution - DONT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!

lids are for kids

Date:February 18, 2012
Lids are NOT durable as stated. And is the one part that takes most of the pounding by trash collectors who throw them 3 feet from the can. One trash can lid will last 3 months before it is cracked ,splits or is of no use. Rubber made is aware of the problem so why not made extra lids available at a low replacement price ;say 5 dollars. Its a shame ; because this is the first review I have ever written or felt the need to write. I have faith in rubbermaid to fix the problem.

more breaks at corners

Date:January 8, 2012
biggest problem with this is that it does not stand up to basic household use. Unfortunately, I did not save the receipt, so a couple years of use and the 10 yr warranty is of no use.
The problem is that the can breaks apart at the bottom corners just like in photos posted by others, so I'll forego posting another picture.
Yep, the trash guys are probably harder on the container than I am, but, that is why I purchased a Roughneck.
We do not live in an area of harsh temps, so I doubt that is th problem, just not built to withstand much use. Too bad.
No receipt = No help from Rubbermaid. So, I'll buy a different brand and hope for a better product.

cracked lids..

Date:January 7, 2012
I wish I would have read the prior reviews!
I also bought two of these at Walmart and within a year and a half, the lids cracked all over! Not just on the sides where you grab them...but through out the entire lid! Do I have my receipt? NO! So, do I have to pay for two lids? Lets see if Rubbermaid is the good ol company it was known for in the day...

Quality was good then fell apart

Date:October 10, 2011
I bought two of these through walmart for a great price at the time when i bought my house. Used them for about 5 years now with great success, then all of a sudden cracks have started occuring in the materials. I repaired the first few but more and more keep appearing. In the near future they will be nothing but a pile of pieces. The other can i bought at the same time is still going strong. The cans lived inside the carport and were never left out in the sun or the rain, not sure why they fell appart. With my light usage i would hardly call this can industrial.

lid breaks...can or trash fills with rain

Date:October 1, 2011
The can itself is durable and a good size for 45 gal bags for dumping household trash into one large bag. However, the lid started to crack less than a year after purchase and is now almost totally useless. It lets rain water into the trash making a big mess. I bought this to save money on trash bags and maximize trash in the can. I cannot do this now. Not a good buy.

50gal Roughneck

Date:August 2, 2011
I have purchased 5 of these over the years, and they all do the same thing....BREAK. Not one has stood up to the weather, or the basic trash handling. The claim of being durable and weather resistent is untrue. Im tired of wasting my money on these. Not worth the 30.00 sticker price, IMHO

Good can....Lid will break.

Date:June 23, 2011
The can itself is solid, durable and wheels easily up and down the driveway. The lid lasted for 1-2 years but it started to crack, just like other reviewers. I suggest getting some high strength epoxy and mending cracks early. It prolongs the life of the lid for a while at least.

outside trash can

Date:May 25, 2011
I like this trash can I can wheel it down the driveway with ease!! However sometimes the can wants to flip on me mostly in the winter time.. and I might be tough all right.. but when the trash men throw it all the time it does break I just had to duct tape the bottom front because it is cracked.. :-( So I think it would be a great idea to come up with a trash can they can't destroy.. :-) I pay good money for these rubber maid trash cans and to have the trashmen destroy it is unreal.. don't even say well then they should replace it that is a joke HAHAHA tried that... but over all I like it.. thanks so much.
